MeerGuard VPN vs NEO VPN: an honest 2026 comparison
If you're choosing between two popular Telegram-based VPNs, we ran both through ten criteria. Below is a comparison table, an honest verdict (including the part where NEO VPN beats us on entry-level price), and five reasons to try MeerGuard VPN anyway.
Short answer. MeerGuard VPN wins NEO VPN on three key points: protocol — VLESS Reality versus WireGuard, where Reality holds up better under Russian DPI; first-party iOS and Android apps versus third-party WireGuard clients; and Uzbek plus Tajik localisation. NEO VPN is cheaper at entry (99 ₽ versus our 198 ₽) and offers 8 devices on its MORPHEUS premium tier. Details below.

Five reasons to pick MeerGuard VPN
1. VLESS Reality is harder to block than "raw" WireGuard
NEO VPN runs on WireGuard — that's stated openly on their site. WireGuard is excellent on speed and simplicity, but it has a known limitation: handshake packets carry a recognisable signature in the very first byte. Public reports from the Net4People and GFW Report communities for 2024–2025 indicate Russian DPI gear routinely fingerprints unobfuscated WireGuard — which is why these tunnels tend to brown out during blocking sweeps.
Whether NEO VPN runs additional obfuscation on top of WireGuard (AmneziaWG, Cloak, a custom wrapper) is not disclosed publicly on neovpn.online. If they're running raw WireGuard, the same picture applies as for any other WG provider under Russian DPI.
VLESS Reality, which powers MeerGuard VPN, works differently. It disguises your connection as a normal TLS handshake to a legitimate external site (think www.microsoft.com). To block Reality at the network level, a provider would have to simultaneously cut access to that real microsoft.com — politically and technically costly. Reality is not invulnerable (there are documented detection cases via active SNI probing), but the cost of blocking is markedly higher than for WireGuard.
For users abroad or on less aggressive networks, WireGuard is perfectly fine. But if stability inside Russia in 2026 is your priority, Reality wins on the long run.
2. First-party apps vs third-party WireGuard clients
NEO VPN hands you a WireGuard config that you import into the official WireGuard client for iOS, Android, Windows or macOS. It works, but it asks the user to install two apps instead of one and to understand what a .conf file is.
MeerGuard VPN ships a branded app called MeerGuard-Smart:
- Listed in App Store and Google Play under our brand.
- One-tap connect — no manual key copy.
- Automatic location switching.
- Linked to the subscription — no manual config refresh after renewal.
- Web dashboard at meerguard.ru with payment history, device binding and location switching.
If you're used to "how big VPN services do it", MeerGuard VPN will feel familiar.
3. Four interface languages versus three — and a rare presence of Uzbek/Tajik
NEO VPN lists three interface languages on its site: Russian, English, Chinese (for their Chinese audience). MeerGuard VPN is localised into four: Russian, English, Uzbek (uz-UZ) and Tajik (tg-TJ) — a rare combination among Telegram-based VPNs. We ship separate locales with their own FAQ that covers local pain points (TikTok / Skype / Facebook in Uzbekistan; periodic Telegram blocks in Tajikistan). Uzbek and Tajik versions are in active native-review iteration — if you spot a translation slip, tell support and we'll patch it in the next release.
4. A wider payments shelf — Apple Pay included
NEO VPN's Privacy Policy openly recommends cryptocurrency as "the most private payment option". The full list of card, SBP and YooMoney methods is not published on the site — it shows up only inside the bot. That's fine but it asks you to sign up just to see the conditions.
MeerGuard VPN lists every method up front:
- Russian bank card via YooKassa.
- Telegram Stars — no bank details needed.
- USDT, BTC, TON via CryptoBot.
- Apple Pay — directly from the iOS app via App Store.
If you've ever hit "couldn't pay, the right method is missing" — MeerGuard VPN is unlikely to put you there.
5. Public REST API
api.meerguard.app is a REST API with JWT auth that lets you script subscription management — fetch the key, switch servers, check remaining traffic. NEO VPN has no public API in open sources — management appears to be bot-only.
If you're a developer or DevOps engineer who wants to integrate VPN access into a workflow, ours works out of the box.
Where NEO VPN is honestly better — we won't pretend otherwise
For the comparison to be useful, we have to admit the weak spots:
- NEO's entry-level price is lower. 99 ₽ for the NEO tier (2 devices) is below our 198 ₽ minimum. Per the description on neovpn.online, the NEO tier ships "regular speed" servers, with premium locations only on MORPHEUS. If absolute minimum price matters most and Reality / first-party app / Uzbek language are not on your shortlist — NEO VPN is the better deal at entry.
- MORPHEUS gives 8 devices for 249 ₽. On the MORPHEUS tier NEO offers 8 simultaneous connections for 249 ₽. MeerGuard VPN ships a 3-device baseline and lets you buy add-on slots separately. If you need 6–8 devices in a single bundle, MORPHEUS works out cheaper than our base plus 5 extras.
- A two-week trial — if it still applies. The vc.ru article from October 2023 mentioned a 14-day premium trial on NEO VPN. We couldn't find confirmation that it remains a permanent public offer, but if it still applies, NEO's trial is four times longer than ours (14 vs 3 days).
We won't downplay these points — they're real strengths of NEO VPN. Your call depends on your priorities.
When to pick MeerGuard VPN
- You're in Russia and want a protocol that survives DPI waves — Reality holds up better than WireGuard.
- You want a first-party one-tap app, not the work of importing a config into WireGuard.
- You live in Uzbekistan or Tajikistan and want a native-language interface.
- You want to pay via Telegram Stars or Apple Pay without leaving the app.
- You're a developer and want to script subscription management via an API.
When to pick NEO VPN
- The single most important criterion is the lowest monthly price (99 ₽).
- You need 8 devices in one bundle without buying add-on slots.
- You already use NEO VPN, everything works, and switching for the sake of new features isn't worth it.
FAQ on the comparison
Which works better in Russia in 2026 — Reality or WireGuard? By public observation from Net4People and GFW Report — Reality is the more resilient choice. Raw WireGuard is fingerprinted by DPI gear via the handshake signature, and during blocking sweeps providers cut those tunnels. Reality disguises itself as a TLS handshake to a legitimate external site — to block it, the provider would have to simultaneously cut access to that real site, which is politically and technically expensive. Reality isn't invulnerable (active SNI probing is a documented detection vector), but the cost of blocking is markedly higher. MeerGuard VPN runs on Reality; NEO VPN runs on WireGuard (per their site, with no public disclosure of obfuscation on top).
Can I migrate from NEO VPN to MeerGuard VPN without losing my setup? Yes. Grab a MeerGuard VPN key (3-day free trial), install MeerGuard-Smart from App Store or Google Play. Your existing NEO VPN subscription keeps working in parallel until the paid period ends — the two services don't conflict. If you decide to stay with us, just don't renew NEO.
But NEO is cheaper — why pay more? NEO's base tier at 99 ₽ vs ours at 198 ₽ is a real 99 ₽/month gap, or about 1200 ₽/year. For that gap you get: VLESS Reality instead of WireGuard, the MeerGuard-Smart first-party app, the web dashboard, Apple Pay support, Uzbek/Tajik localisation, the REST API. If none of those matter to you, NEO is the fair pick.
Whose trial is longer? NEO VPN, per the vc.ru article, offered 2 weeks of premium. That was one 2023 source, and we couldn't confirm the promo still runs as of 14 May 2026. MeerGuard VPN's trial is 3 days, published openly and consistently — no card required, no hidden subscription.
Does NEO VPN have an App Store app? No, we couldn't find a first-party NEO VPN app in App Store. They route users to the third-party WireGuard client. MeerGuard VPN does have a first-party MeerGuard-Smart in both App Store and Google Play.
Server locations?
NEO VPN lists on its site: UK, Germany, France, Russia, USA, Singapore, Finland, plus "premium locations" on MORPHEUS without disclosing the list. MeerGuard VPN covers Russia + CIS + Europe + USA + Asia. The exact server map is in our bot under /locations.
